Math: Learning Goals: For students to use place value mats and ten concepts to solve subtraction problems
Success Criteria
1. I can use place value mats to solve subtraction problems
2. I can use borrowing to solve subtraction problems
3. I can identify when to subtract or add during word problems
~Explanation:
Today we are moving on from addition and introducing subtracting using a place value mat. Please watch the video below as it will show you the explanation on subtracting using a place value mat.
Page 165: You will be looking at the story problem called ‘Read All About It’. This word problem is asking us to subtract as Leo gave some of his books away to Lizzie. Once you solve the subtraction word problem, the last question is asking you to think and show another way to solve the problem
Bonus Question to solve on a place value mat.
Miss. Gandy had 59 erasers in her desk drawer. Mr. Foster needed some erasers for his class so she gave him 22 to have. How many erasers does Miss. Gandy now have? Solve using a place value mat.

Language: Learning Goals: For students to write a journal about using the journal writing components
Success Criteria
1.  I can brainstorm and organize my ideas
2. I can include a date, introduction sentence, sentence starters, periods and capitals.
3.  I can independently write my journal entry.
~Explanation:
Today you will be writing a journal. Your journal prompt for today is... If you looked outside and every leaf from every tree had fallen off and covered the ground, what would you do? Brainstorm ideas about what you do. You can use the brainstorming page below and sent via email. Think about the sequence, the order you would do it. Think of the sentences to write in your head and remember to use the W’s, nouns, verbs and adjectives to add detail like your practiced with your spelling sentences.
Example: I would rake up a pile of leaves (with who, where and why)* Those W’s can help make a better detailed sentence
Remember to use the correct components when writing your journal
  1. 1. Date
  1. 2. Introduction sentence
  1. 3. First, Next, Then, Also and Lastly (sentence starters)
  1. 4. Periods, capitals and DETAILED sentences
Quiet Time Session: RAZ KIDS session for 30 minutes answering comprehension questions and quizzes or use the amazon link I sent out yesterdahttps://stories.audible.com/start-listen for free audible children stories.

Unit of Inquiry: Learning Goals: For students to learn and create their own ‘Day of The Dead’ sugar skull.
Success Criteria
1. I understand the skulls are a positive symbol.
2. I can decorate my skill using bright colours.
3. I can use additional materials to make my sugar skull stand out.

~Explanation:
Today we are going to learn about a significant (important) day within the Mexican community. This holiday is called ‘Day of The Dead’. This is a time where families gather and pay their respects and celebrate their ancestors. They take this time to honour the people who have passed away within their family. Day of The Dead is a joyful time. First, people set up a candlelit altar in their homes so spirits can find their way back to their relatives. The altar also offers some of the favorite foods of the deceased—just in case they get hungry. Items that were important to the ancestors when they were alive, such as a favorite book or musical instrument, are placed on the altar as well. They also listen to music and dance to celebrate the memory of beloved family members. One important thing that is done during this tradition is the creation of sugar skulls. Unlike the skulls you see at Halloween, sugar skulls aren't scary. They're happy, colourful and smiling. These skulls are meant to show the joy and happy memories you remember when you think of a lost loved one. People will also paint their faces to look like a sugar skull to celebrate the holiday.

Your job today is to create your own sugar skull using the template sent via email or in the printout package. For this activity you can use marker (jeez when do I ever let you use marker... take advantage 😊 ) You want you sugar skull to be colourful and bright. You can also use glitter at the end to make some areas of your skull stand out. Please see the two YouTube videos that will show you a little more about Day of The Dead and making sugar skulls.

Music: I was so happy to hear so many wonderful compositions about the importance of "staying home!" I heard lovely singing, piano playing and lovely lyrics written.  Today in music class please listen to the example of a concerto.  A concerto is a piece of music where one or more instruments plays in front of an orchestra.  You will find this example on:
  1. Please click on the green arrow and listen to examples of a concerto including Bach's concerto.
  1. Please draw a picture or write a story that explains how the music makes you feel, or what it makes you think of.  Examples could include what instruments does the music make you think of (flute?  Violin?).
  1. When you are finished you play  musical games on the game section such as "Play note names" and  compose your own music.
  1.  Next you may write rhythms which can include spring words to match the rhythm.  A fun way you can do this would be outside on your sidewalk with chalk!  Be creative and have fun!  Or inside on paper with markers or crayons.  For example "I love spring flowers" ta, ti ti , ta, ta" - quarter note, eighth note eighth note, quarter note, quarter note.
  1.  I will be recording a video for next class that you can sing along with at home.  If you have any requests for songs that you love that we sing in class please email them to me at amcmillan@stjudesacademy.com.  I will try to include the songs that you love to sing!   https://youtu.be/a0p8RhOGrocMrs. McMillan😃
