Day 20

What a busy Tuesday!

Math:Today we started the day with Math; we were focusing on learning how to answer word problems. Before we began I had children sit on the carpet and we answered two word problems on the white board. I told them that for working out word problems you follow these steps.

1. Read the question.

2. Read the question again and think about what it is asking us to do.

3. Underline or circle important words that are going to help us figure the question out.

4. Solve it.

We did a few more examples on the board where children recognized words like more, fell off, remove, gave away and gather as key words that would help us decide if we needed to add or subtract. Children then worked on some word problems in their workbook.

To finish our math lesson we practiced our counting in 2’s, 3’s and 5’s! I am encouraging children to continue working on their counting at home.

Before music we painted our Thanksgiving turkey and let it sit to dry!

After gym we did our 5-minute daily mediation. We are now starting to introduce reflection and thinking about our day. How is our day going? How do we feel? Are we worried about anything? Are we excited about anything?

Inquiry into Language:Today we learned about different sentence starters we can use in our writing. We brainstormed a few as a class and discussed them! Then we talked about what journal writing is and what we write in a journal. We looked at what we need in a journal i.e., date, title, beginning, middle and end. We said that journal writing has to be in order of what has happened. We came up with a class journal of what we did this morning!

Tomorrow children will be writing their own journal about what they did this past weekend, using a variety of sentence starters.

Unit of Inquiry: We read a thanksgiving book and talked about what we are thankful for in our lives. Then we made our Thanksgiving turkey! They turned out so well!!!

What is Action?

Many people think that action is easy to define. It is something you do right? But action is much more than that. Action is a part of who we are. If we want to change the world we need to start with changing ourselves. But sometimes change is hard. How do we make changes to the way we think so we can help the world? If we want children to make a difference in the world we need to help them personalize the action they take, and understand that it is not just a mandate from their teachers and parents, but a life long mindset they develop. Taking action can happen at any age. Support children and youth as they begin the learning journey towards becoming adults that are change agents!
