Dear SJA Lower School (JK to Grade 6) Families,
An annual event in the Lower School is our highly anticipated Year-Ahead Day. Students look forward to this fun tradition at St. Jude’s Academy where they get to skip ahead and spend the day in the next grade. Teachers will let students know who their Year-Ahead Day teacher is at the end of day on Friday, February 7, 2020.
Please note that the placement for this day does not indicate class placement for the following school year.
Sincerely, The SJA Lower School Team

Happy Tremendous Tuesday!
Story Connection: Today students read the story ‘ish’ about a young boy that learns that thinking ish-ly is far more wonderful than always getting things right or perfect. Students then needed to make three different connections: text to self, text to text and text to the world. We shared some very thoughtful connections that I was really impressed with. Some of us thought about how Ramon’s thinking reminded them of the lesson about growth and fixed mindset and some connected this book to being a bucket filler and not only filling our bucket but the buckets of others we do not know!
Math: Today we went over the math review and any questions before our test tomorrow. Then we created a survey to ask our friends, recorded the data using tallies and put that information into a bar graph. We also reviewed what is needed on a bar graph. Then students practiced counting and tallying different amounts of dots.
Inquiry into Language: Today students wrote a journal about “if you were a groundhog, how would you predict the weather?’ Students used whiteboards to help them brainstorm different ideas and then they put their ideas into sequential order. They used the proper components of journal writing such as...
1. Date
2. Introduction sentence
3. First, Then, Next, Lastly
4. Periods, capitals
French: There was no French today so students read chapter 10 of our novel study ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’ and answered comprehension questions about what they had read.
Agenda:
1. Read 15 minutes
2. Bring back re-registration package
3. Spelling test Friday
4. Spelling sentences due Friday
5. Math test tomorrow
6. Math review due tomorrow
Unit of Inquiry: Today students continued to learn about Henry Ford. We reviewed what we learned about him yesterday such as creating the Ford Motor Company, creating the first mass production of the automobile and the assembly line. Today we also looked at the transformation of the automobile over the years and what has been added to the automobile to make it safer for us. For example seat belts, doors and air bags etc. Students then created a fact file about Henry Ford!
Have a wonderful evening,
Love, Miss Gandy
