Today one of our friends lost a tooth! I hope the tooth fairy spoils YOU!!

Science Fair: Today students were introduced to our science fair project called ‘Apple Oxidation’. Today we introduced the vocabulary used in our experiment called chemical reaction, oxygen and oxidation. We conducted an experiment to find out if adding another substance (liquid) could prevent apples from turning brown. We cut apple slices and soaked them in soda, water, oil, lemon juice and vinegar. Students wrote out their hypothesis about what substance they thought would help stop them from browning. After a few hours we observed the apple slices and what they looked like at the end of the experiment. We came to the conclusion that lemon juice prevented the browning of apples the most! Next week we will write out our analysis and conclusion and conduct the experiment again in order to produce a fair test.

Math: Today students had to read and record days and weeks on a calendar. Once students were finished they were asked determine how they would share 50 cents in coins between three people. All three people had to have the same number of coins, for example

Person 1- 10 cents + 10 cents

Person 2- 10 cents + 5 cents

Person 3- 10 cents + 5 cents = 50 cents

Inquiry into Language: Today students read Chapter 7 of our novel study and answered comprehension questions about what we read.

Unit of Inquiry: Today students continued to work on their rough copy for their writing assessment. Some were able to start their good copies as well! Student took pictures of their dinosaur face to cut our and put on their drawing. We will continue this on Thursday when we are back from out trip.

What is Action?

Many people think that action is easy to define. It is something you do right? But action is much more than that. Action is a part of who we are. If we want to change the world we need to start with changing ourselves. But sometimes change is hard. How do we make changes to the way we think so we can help the world? If we want children to make a difference in the world we need to help them personalize the action they take, and understand that it is not just a mandate from their teachers and parents, but a life long mindset they develop. Taking action can happen at any age. Support children and youth as they begin the learning journey towards becoming adults that are change agents!
